Hello World,
Welcome to my portfolio. I hope that reading this letter will help you to gain an understanding of the concept of this portfolio. Over the course objectives for this Writing for science 21003 class was to explore and analyze writing, a variety genre, and rhetorical situations; develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing; and engage in the collaborative and social-science aspects of the writing process etc. For this class, I submitted three different science genres, they are an informative article, the position paper, research paper proposal, and a critical research paper. Each of them contained different information about the science in our society and how we are not focusing on what science is telling us. These issues are seen but not heard by many in society. Out of all my essays, the research paper is my most favorite essay because it talked about the myth against the Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccines. It illustrated the misconception against the MMR vaccine and how people are not trusting research studies which prove that there is no correlation between the MMR vaccines and Autism Spectrum Disorder. In my writing, I tried to show that the MMR vaccines are not harmful to our kids, instead, it helps kids from the deadly virus.
The informative paper was to write an informative science article in a way the public can understand without taking any position. For this paper, I focused on the therapeutic cloning.
The strategy I used to write this paper was to start the opening sentence about organs that can be produced through Therapeutic cloning. My idea was to mention about organ failure in a way people can feel related to it because there are a lot of people with organ failure, but there are not enough organs for every single patient and they must wait until they get a match to an organ donor. After that, I gave the definition of cloning and what are different kinds of cloning in a way an audience will understand. From there, I linked to therapeutic cloning and informed how it will improve our medical system.
The position paper was to choose one of the alternative energy sources and inform about how it will help us to produce electricity by taking a position.
I chose to talk about solar energy and wind power as alternative energy. My audience was individuals who had little knowledge about science and people who are in the science field. To write this paper, I read the research paper “A solar Energy Proposal for the University Kansas” by Dr.Kelly Kindscher, which helped me talk about the solar energy because their university wanted to generate their own electricity by the solar energy and in this research, they raised all the possibilities to use Solar energy. To write this paper, the strategy that I used was to brainstorm the negative and positives aspect regarding the solar energy and wind power, then I find sources from the oppose and counter view from the CUNY database website to make my paper stronger.
Finally, the last paper was a critical research paper, but to start my paper I needed a hypothesis question. For the research paper, the audience was people who are in the science field.
The research topic was “Disbelief against the MMR vaccines” and hypothesis questions was why in the European regions not vaccinating their kids? Is there a relationship between the MMR vaccines and Autism Spectrum disorder? As I asked myself those questions, I came up with my hypothesis and did research based on my hypothesis to write this research paper. Also, I found out niches in the previous research paper and gave a solution to what we can do to make this research paper beer by using another research paper. The strategy, I used to write all this paper was to learn about the topics in order to apply them in my writing. For example, for the informative essay, I had to learn about what is cloning? What is therapeutic cloning? to write a paper about therapeutic cloning for my reader in a way, the general public could understand. Also, I had to do some research about cloning and read the article that was given in the class as well as for the position paper. However, for the position paper, I had to find out about the negative and positive aspects regarding the solar panel and wind turbines for that I had to use the CUNY database to find opposing and supporting views to shows concession and counterclaim, such as
“Both the wind turbines and solar panels do not produce greenhouse gases and decrease the rate of global warming. They benefit our environment, but there are concerns about the expenses and the ecosystem. “From 1978 to 2015, the real cost of a solar panel declined from $80 per watt to below $0.50 per watt around a 24% drop in cost for every doubling of cumulative production” (Sivaram 2017).”
Also, I used visual images to support my thesis. For example,
This picture shows solar canopies in the parking lot. Furthermore, in the class, we worked as a group share the pros and cons regarding solar energy, with the whole class. As for the critical research paper, I did a presentation in the class and shared my research topic with the class for that I had to do a lot of researching to find out sources. Resources that I used were from the .edu, .org, and .gov etc. websites because these websites sources we can trust and make my paper stronger.
After writing the papers, I revised and collaborate with my tutor and classmates to ensure I included all the information, and how can it be improved. Collaborating with peers and tutors helped me to make a correction that I needed to make. Also, using visual images makes it easier for the reader to understand. The research helped me to find out stronger sources, which helped to make my paper stronger. Therefore, writing for science class helped me to become a better writer, the learning process will enable me to be better at science writing and research paper.
I hope Everyone will enjoy my science writing.
Sincerely,
Samiha Zarin
